Hi Dona, There are a few

Hi Dona,

There are a few companies you can use to help the transition to Dalian. DDAFESCO and Santa Fe are good businesses that are eager to help! Also, dalianxpat.com is a great resource of information from local expats!
Hope that helps!

Hi Dona,

Your plans for your move will mostly depend on where exactly in Dalian your husband will be located. Will he be in the Software Park? The Shipyard? The High Tech Zone? The Development Zone?

Once you establish that, it should be pretty straight forward to make some contacts in the area. I'd be wary about agencies like those mentioned above. (Sorry anonymous!)

Chat with as many people as you can on here, and on Facebook as well. (Do a search for Dalian groups on Facebook, that's useful) Most people will be willing to answer any questions you may have. Be wary about local Chinese agencies who want to charge for the same advice.

Saying That....

I've met a guy who works at (Santa Fe) http://www.santaferelo.com/ in Dalian, and he seemed nice. I believe it's a foreign company, and not a Chinese run one. I can't personal say whether they or even this sort of service is good or not, but I'd agree with Rick in that speaking to people is probably a good thing and that most are happy to answer questions.

Regards,

Alastair

RELOCATION

Frank's picture

Hi Dona,
I am a german who will return to Germany soon after spending three years in Dalian. It is a quite comfortable city and you will love it.
Regarding your questions: as Rick mentioned the circumstnces of living are really depending on where your husband will be located. There are three international schools.
American: in JinShiTan about 40 km from Dalian downtown, including a living compound, looks nice from ouside, for instance INTEL is located in JinShiTan
Korean: in KaiFaQu, Development ZOne, I do not know more details about their english "abilities"
Canadian: located in downtown as well as in KaiFaQu and JinShiTan; Quality? I do not know
About houses and apartments: It is depending on how much money you want/are willing to spend. One of german colleagues just found a nice compound in KaiFaQu, a house 140 sqm, suurounded by a samll garden, about 15.000 RMB. near to the forest(whatever chinese call forest) new built.
Professional relocation: SANTA FE just made a quotation for my relocation to Germany, it was a french guy and I could give you his address, if you are intersted. Of course it is a paid service, but considering my own experiences maybe it will help to solve important and urgent questions as administration matters and health care.

Good luck!

Hi Dona, I'd begin by

Hi Dona,

I'd begin by breaking down what you do know. There's obviously a lot to learn about Dalian, but this might help.

Where will you live (roughly, if known)? Where will your husband be working? What will you both earn? How old are your children? How long will you be here for, and how keen/apaptable are you to local culture?

In the mean time, I'd browse the articles via the top menu. Also, pay special attention anything that appears in the 'featured articles' or 'related content' block on the sidebar.
