The likely large haul of medals for China in the coming Olympics might suggest that this is a country with impressive sporting infrastructure. In terms of producing elite athletes, that might be the case, but grass-roots facitlites are mediocre and home-grown sporting competitions such as the Chinese Football league are plagued by corruption, a lack of competitiveness, and the resulting low attendance levels. In the two-thirds empty Jinzhou Stadium, the Dalian fans who belong to the diehard "ultras" have their work cut out to provide enough atmosphere to be the team's "12th man". The score in the Chinese league match against South-China side Changsha ended 1-1.
